Microsurgical Connective Tissue Gingival Grafts -
Gum grafts done comfortably...

Periodontal procedures are available to stop further dental problems and gingival (gum) recession, and/or to improve the esthetics of your gum line. Exposed tooth roots are one result of gum recession. Perhaps you wish to enhance your smile by covering one or more of these roots that make your teeth appear too long. Perhaps you're not bothered by the appearance of these areas, but you cringe because the exposed roots are sensitive to hot or cold foods and liquids or dental cleaning instruments.

Your gums may have receded for a variety of reasons, but the most common cause is the painless infection called periodontitis.  This painless infection eats away the bone which supports the teeth.  In every case, the gums recede only after the bone has first receded.  Most people are unaware of the painless cause of the recession, but prior to treatment, Dr. Korn and his staff will help you identify the factors contributing to the problem. Once these contributing factors are controlled, a gingival (gum) graft procedure can repair the gingival defect and help to prevent additional gingival recession and bone loss.

Gingival grafts are mainly used to rebuild an adequate gingival seal, or they can be used to cover exposed roots.  It is important for periodontal patients considering gingival grafting to understand the difference between traditional "skin" grafting which was developed in the 1950s, and the more-modern, microsurgical, "connective tissue" gingival grafting.  Both procedures involve taking gum tissue from your palate, but they differ because the newer technique does not involve taking any skin.  Connective tissue gingival grafting takes considerably more time, skill and judgment to do well.  The best results are achieved when the doctor uses a microscope to enhance and to perfect the fit of the graft.  Due to the superior comfort, appearance  and speed of healing, Dr. Korn provides only connective tissue gingival grafts in his practice.  Dr. Korn has provided thousands of connective tissue gingival grafts since 1992.

What are the benefits of this procedure?
Connective tissue gingival grafts can help stop bone loss when combined with acceptable plaque levels. In some cases, gingival grafting can cover exposed roots to protect them from decay or sensitivity or can improve the appearance of your smile.  Many patients are plesantly surprised how comfortable this treatment can be.  A beautiful new smile and improved periodontal health - your keys to smiling, eating and speaking with comfort and confidence.
